WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD — Portions of Santos Dumont and Wright avenues are either undergoing construction or will be under construction soon, as part of two major construction projects, here.

Through June 10, portions of Santos Dumont Avenue will either be closed or traffic will be rerouted due to construction of the Regional Satellite Communications Support Center, or SATOM.

Starting June 13 through Aug. 5, portions of Wright Avenue will either closed or rerouted due to the Whole Barracks Renewal project.

The barracks project was awarded to Kiewit Pacific Building Group, and will provide much-needed barracks space for about 200 Soldiers who are assigned to the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, according to the Schofield Barracks Area Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Honolulu District. The $44.50 million contract will draw the majority of the labor force from the local community.

The Schofield Barracks Area Office, USACE-HD, is performing the supervision and administration of both construction contracts on WAAF.

Like the barracks project, the SATCOM project will get most of its labor force from the local community. The $4.38-million SATCOM project will replace an existing and inadequate facility that the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command currently occupies, according the Schofield Barracks Area Office, USACE-HD.

The work on both Santos Dumont and Wright avenues are for utility connections, storm drain construction and road reconstruction.
