25th ID mourns four ‘Bronco’ losses

The Department of Defense announced the deaths of four Soldiers, recently, who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in the Kunar province, Afghanistan.

All four deaths were the result of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked their units with small arms fire.

Spc. Levi Nuncio, 24, of Harrisonburg, Va., died June 22.

1st. Lt. Dimitri Del Castillo, 24, of Tampa, Fla., died June 25.

Staff Sgt. Nigel Kelly, 26, of Menifee, Calif., died June 25.

Spc. Kevin Hilaman, 28, of Albany, Calif., died June 26.

Hilaman, Del Castillo and Nuncio were all assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.

Kelly, was assigned to 3rd Bde. Special Troops Bn., 3rd BCT.

Nuncio joined the Army Sept. 23, 2009, as a combat medic. The OEF deployment was his first. Nuncio’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, two Purple Hearts, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the NATO medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Overseas Service Ribbon, a Global War on Terrorism Medal, a Combat Medical Badge and the Army Service Medal.

Del Castillo joined the Army May 23, 2009. Del Castillo’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, a Purple Heart, an Army Commendation Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, a Combat Infantry Badge, an Expert Infantry Badge, a Parachutist Badge, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Overseas Ribbon, an Army Good Conduct Medal and the NATO Medal.

Kelly joined the Army Aug. 20, 2003, as combat engineer. Kelly’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster, an Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, an Army Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, a Valorous Unit Award, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, an Army Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, an Iraq Campaign Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Medal, a Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, an Army Service Ribbon, an Overseas Service Ribbon (with numeral 4), a Combat Action Badge, an Air Assault Badge and the Sapper Badge.

Hilaman joined the Army March 7, 2003, as an infantryman. The OEF deployment was his third deployment overseas. Hilaman’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, a Purple Heart, an Army Commendation Medal (2nd oak leaf cluster), an Army Achievement Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, an Iraq Campaign Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Medal, an Army Service Ribbon, a Overseas Service Ribbon (with numeral 2), the NATO Medal, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, an Expert Infantryman’s Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
