CAMP MARMAL, Afghanistan — The Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 524th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, currently stationed at Marzar –e-Sharif, here, welcomed its new commander, Capt. Brian William Smith.

The outgoing commander, Capt. James Rainey III, completed his 15-month command during a change of command ceremony, July 6.

The ceremony was a celebration of HHC’s accomplishments under Rainey and a welcome to Smith in anticipation of great things to come as the company focuses on the mission in Afghanistan.

During his tenure with the HHC, Rainey led the company through a pre-deployment certification exercise that validated the unit’s readiness to deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He deployed his unit seamlessly to Camp Marmal, Regional Command-North, Afghanistan, and quickly established operations in support of coalition forces throughout northern Afghanistan.

“(Rainey) is a selfless leader who leads by example and works hard to build a family environment,” said Lt. Col. James M. Droppleman, the commander of the 524th CSSB. “He is a team builder and motivator; troops appreciate his leadership and hard work.”

Smith hails from Rowley, Mass., and is a graduate of Norwich University. He joined the Army in 2003 as an infantryman. He received his commission as a second lieutenant in 2006 as an ordnance officer. His previous assignment was with the 25th Infantry Division. This is Smith’s fourth deployment, one to Iraq and two previous deployments to Afghanistan.

“(The Soldiers are) standing tall and looking like a well-disciplined unit,” said Smith, addressing the ceremony as their new commander.

“I would ask that each of you here today send my sincerest thanks to your families back home whom carry on while we are off defending freedom halfway around the world,” concluded Droppleman.
