The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) hosted an Easter egg hunt at the Fort Shafter Aloha Center, April 18.

More than 35 family members participated in making crafts, including jellybean bracelets, Easter Bunny masks and painting eggs. The Easter Bunny also made an appearance, hopping into the classroom to greet the children with hugs and waves before taking photos with each family. One family said, “My child has never been able to sit with Santa, the Easter Bunny, or even Mickey Mouse – she has always been too afraid.” However, she was able to sit with the EFMP Easter Bunny to take a photo.

After crafts and pictures, the festivities moved to the courtyard for the Easter egg hunt. The children searched through the courtyard to find more than 250 hidden, candy-filled Easter eggs. Another family said, “I love the EFMP events as they allow my child to be himself, and I never have to worry about his behavior. He is in a safe place here with staff who are patient and understanding.” Many other families shared a similar experience.

“With April being Month of the Military Child, it is important to offer these events so families have an opportunity to get together, share a laugh and create a network that encourages resiliency while giving a lasting and lifelong memory to the children,” said EFMP Manager Leonard Webster. The EFMP, an Army Community Service-sponsored organization that provides assistance to military families and children with special needs, strives to present events that are open to children and adults of all abilities while catering to the specific needs of EFMP families.

Members of the staff take great care to ensure that every child gets equal attention, and accommodations are made so everyone can participate equally. Other events hosted by the EFMP include: Whale Watching cruise, Family Friendly Movie Days, Sports Day and R-word Rally. For more information about EFMP events, contact ACS at (808) 655-4227.
