Every April, Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month programs highlight the need for increased prevention and awareness about the dangers that sexual harassment and assault can have on individuals and communities.

The U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Program team coordinated a “SHARPen Up Your Area” decorating contest for garrison offices to enhance their areas to highlight how the community is taking a stand to combat sexual assault.

There were many thoughtful and creative entries among those who participated. The USAG-HI command team judged the contestants’ entries and determined winners based on most original, most creative, most SHARP and best message.

The Wheeler Army Airfield control tower team created a stunning visual representation by uniting their roles as controllers with “putting out the fires” and “controlling themselves” to win the most original category.

The Schofield Barracks Arts and Crafts program made numerous different props to discuss consent based on a SHARP training video, which compares consent to making someone a cup of tea, earning them the most creative award.

The Family Advocacy Program had a few different aspects in its display, including a “consent wall” where Army Community Service staff members wrote what consent means to them.

FAP also displayed blue jeans in reference to support of “Denim Day,” an internationally recognized day that highlights a court case in which a victim was told she must have consented to the sexual assault because her jeans were too tight and she had to help remove them.

The wonderful displays earned FAP the most SHARP award.

Last, but not least, Religious Support Services and the Chaplains Family Life Center won best message by highlighting hope and healing for survivors of sexual assault. They displayed messages written to encourage believing victims and to support the healing process of those who have been affected.

The USAG-Hawaii SHARP program thanks all of the offices that participated and demonstrated their commitment to combating sexual assault here in the garrison.

  • Most Original – Wheeler Army Airfield Tower
  • Most Creative – Arts and Crafts
  • Most SHARP – Family Advocacy Program
  • Best Message – Religious Support Office
